SCRIE TAC AMOUNTS NOT APPLIED TO
JULY 1, 2011 TAX BILLS

The City Department of Finance (DOF) maintains a computer database for SCRIE that is completely separate from FAIRTAX,  the computer system used for the City’s property taxes. We were recently informed that on June 21, DOF mailed 5,500 letters to owners who were either debited or credited incorrect amounts for their SCRIE tenants, and received incorrect Tenant Abatement Credit (TAC) reports. A sample letter can be downloaded by clicking on this link.

Although DOF has identified which TACs are incorrect, they have not been able to transfer the correct TAC amounts to FAIRTAX.  This means that the July 1 City property tax bills for owners with SCRIE tenants are incorrect. Although DOF had hoped to resolve this problem before the July property tax bills were issued, as of today they have not been able to do so.

Owners with SCRIE tenants will not be able to verify the correct TAC amounts to be applied to their bills unless they have received a letter or they are able to contact DOF by calling 311. We have been informed by DOF that some owners who have not received a letter from DOF may have an incorrect address on file with SCRIE.  DOF has indicated that this can be corrected by sending an email to the electronic mailbox provided on DOF’s website or by calling 311.

DOF plans to give owners affected by this problem an extension of time to pay their bills until July 15, 2011 and will waive any interest accrued. If a property owner chooses to pay before DOF can apply the correct TAC amounts, the owner can apply for a refund or have the credits used to pay down their next tax bill
